An Update On Reality

I spent the last two days writing down the stuff people have asked for in my music/movie/video game store:

  • The song "Kandi" by One Eskimo
  • The DVD to Chances Are
  • The CD to Santana's Supernatural
  • The "Warsaw Concerto" by Richard Addinsell
  • The DVD for the Disney movie Motorcrossed
  • The song "Lucky" by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat
  • The CD to Ready by Trey Songz

Aside from the Trey Songz album, which we don't even carry in our store because it's WEA, and that One Eskimo track, very few people are looking for the really new stuff when it comes to music. Aside from Chances Are and Motorcrossed, both over a decade old, movies seem to be the thing that people scramble into the store to buy on the first week, like The Losers and Cop Out. Chances Are was a request from a 60-something year old lady, and Motorcrossed was from a man looking to buy it for his little girl, which didn't even come up in our UPC as even existing on DVD (although Amazon shows that it was once on VHS). Trey Songz's Ready is still a hot ticket, even with his brand new album coming out in September. And "Lucky" was a huge hit last year, or heck, was it the year before? Damn but it's so easy to lose track of time when you are too busy shilling shit.

Ramblin' Gal

Taken a bit of a hard fall off the diet wagon this last week and a half, not sticking to my regime. It's much harder when Joe is here -- he's been home sick a lot this week and we both don't exactly work well together when it comes to keeping each other on track. And I've eaten out a lot this week which definitely doesn't help.

I am, however, more and more inclined to buy a bicycle. Not that I have the money anytime soon to invest in something sturdy and high quality, but I think the extra exercise would do me some good.

Then again if I had the money I'd seriously invest in some kind of 3-month fitness camp. Someplace far away from temptation, with other like-minded compatriots. I want to go someplace and work and sweat and eat fruits and vegetables and "feel the burn". Too many distractions at home, too many hurdles to leap over just to get through the day feeling triumphant. God, how I would love to just be far away right now.

Bicycle. Must. Get.

An Awfully Big Adventure

Wasp in the bedroom. A lot of squealing, a lot of girly flailing about. Much smashing against walls and floors with my 700+ page biography of Theodore Roosevelt. The deed is done, but the willies will never leave me. Time to set the whole house on fire and start a new uncontaminated life elsewhere.

(Boot) There It Is!

The Line-Up

Finally getting a glimpse of the cast for the new AMC series The Walking Dead based on the comic book of the same name. Liking the looks of this group, although I have yet to see if there are adding an actor for Tyrese yet (unless this IronE Singleton actor playing someone named "T-Dog" is supposed to be Tyrese, which I kinda hope not) though I suppose they might plan to trim down the initial cast to a small cluster to tighten up the storylines for television, although at the rate the character die off in the comic maybe they need to rethink that strategy.

Andrew Lincoln is a British actor playing Kentucky cop Rick Grimes, and I think at least two of these other actors have been in the movie The Mist but damn if I could remember who they played. Buy yay, very excited! Hope this doesn't bust.

She's Come Undone?

My heavens, what a jittery, unstable mess I've been today. Must have been the coffee I had this afternoon, because two hours later I was shaking and jabbering and eating all the food in the house and constantly checking my mail as if I have a jury duty notice, only to remember that it's Joe that has a jury duty notice and not me. Okay, I really need to quit coffee this time. I can't keep ruining my diet and ceasing to function like a productive member of society. Dear God, I even ate at McDonald's tonight, like some stoner with the munchies or something, and now I just feel hungry and gross. And physically tired, but unable to sleep. Cripes, I wanna puke...

Into The Gap

Does anybody remember the Thompson Twins Adventure home computer game that came out in 1984? Hopefully I'm not the only one who hasn't, although now that I've played a retro version of it at World Of Spectrum I kinda wish I hadn't. Apparently one of their albums that came out around that time -- and although I probably have it I couldn't tell you which -- had some kind of code where if you taped the record to a cassette and did something and then did, uh, something else I guess you could play some shoddily made "adventure" game by telling the Twins where to go, so long as you knew sort of what to type (and "to hell" didn't work for me). Anyway, craptastic as it is, I'm kind of... addicted. Mostly because I perversely want to see where this is all heading, though I'm certain that it is ultimately nothing good. Then again I'm the nerd that actually enjoyed playing both the Journey video arcade game AND the Atari 2600 home game.

From Somebody About Someone Else

Joe's comments on the passing of George Steinbrenner, via his Facebook page.

Before I was into sports entertainment I was a big baseball fan- one of my favorite books was Sparky Lyle's The Bronx Zoo talking about the Yankees in 1978- their amazing comeback after being I think 17 1/2 games back in the division.Of course one of the major characters was the BOSS- George Stienbrenner- long before Vinny Mac and Stone Cold Steve Austin played out the boss versus the worker storyline in WWF- Stienbrenner hired and fired fiery manager Billy Martin 5 times in the late 70s,early 80s-Stienbrenner was competitive and tried to buy winning- money does not always buy chemistry(something the Heat may find out-the way my Orioles and Redskins have)-but his goal was to win and he accomplished that goal for his franchise several times during his tenure as the boss.A true character - I was not his biggest fan(actually not a fan) - but his impact on the game was undeniable- and I think his impact(and Reggie and others on those teams) on sports entertainment and sports will continue forward

Harvey Pekar, 1939-2010

Go rent American Splendor. Seriously. Just, go rent it. Then carry your ass down to the comic book store and start buying up some American Splendor comix. Then go dig up every youtube clip of his many hilariously contentious appearances on Late Nite with David Letterman. Then come sit down and have a good cry with me.

The Age Of Innocence

I remember this commercial vividly running every Saturday morning in between cartoons and American Bandstand right around the time when The Empire Strikes Back was about to be released, and my friend Lara was already super hardcore into Boba Fett, even though she knew nothing about him except that she really wanted his Underoos. Funny how when we finally went to see the movie together Lara got so mad at Boba Fett for freezing Han Solo in carbonite that when there was a close-up of him walking past the screen Lara screamed, jumped to her feet and threw her flop-flop at the movie screen. Christ, I laughed so hard.

Anyway, yeah, kids prancing about in their underwear. And I still laugh like an eleven year old every time the girl that sings "And R2D2 just makes me smile!" sounds like she rips a fart. Good times.

Three Men And A Little Industry

Veer magazine profiles three of the longest-lasting independent music stores in the Hampton Roads area. I used to work at Mitch Kirsner's Fantasy out in Newport News for a short while, and hung out almost daily at Steve Athey's Skinnies when I lived in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood, shooting the shit with Steve and Jeff (RIP). And I've been going to Barry Friedman's Birdland in Virginia Beach since his father ran the place, the Friedman's being old friends of my family and Barry is one of the nicest guys in the industry.

If you are ever in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, or Newport News, stop by any one of these little indie stores. They're pretty much all that we have left anymore.
